Your mind is buzzing with countless lists of things to do and remember. But relax:
you'll be well-organized if you follow these helpful hints.
- Call the moving company to confirm the arrival time for the moving van.
- Feed the kids and pets and get them out of the way. Send the kids to friend's
houses. Place pets in a kennel or tie them up in the backyard.
- Set aside one closet as a "do not take" area. Inside, place those items that you
don't want the movers to take. These items might include:
- Cleaning supplies for when after the movers leave
- Items you will need on the road
- Extra set of keys
- Prescription medicines
- Items you'll need to help you settle in at your new home
- Items you'll need for your first meal in your new home
- As soon as you've finished packing a box, label it in a conspicuous place. Do this
even if your movers use their own labeling system. Colored tape in the boxes may
help you identify what room in your new house a box is to be moved into.
- Give the movers the phone number where you can be reached in the event they have questions.
- Accompany the movers to the weigh station and obtain a final weight and cost
for the shipment.
- Clean the house once more after they leave. This'll help you find thing you may
have forgotten to pack.
- Dispose of any garbage.
- Check all thermostats.
- Turn off all faucets and lights.
- Check to see that you have all important documents and extra sets of keys.
- Close and lock windows and outside doors.
- Leave a set of keys with the real estate agency.
- Don't plan to drive too long on the day of your move. You'll most likely be
exhausted from the moving activities.
- Try to arrive at your new home the day before the moving van.
When the movers arrive...
When the movers arrive, walk with them through the house as they fill out the inventory.
Make sure the condition of each item is properly recorded. This inventory will become
your proof in the event items become damaged in transit.
When you arrive at your new house...
- Notify the moving company that you've arrived.
- Make certain that you have a certified check, cash, traveler's check, or money
order prepared for the moving van.
- Make sure all utilities are in operation and are in your name.
